It will be 'near-enough impossible' for Wayne Rooney to save Derby County this season, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes.
Naby Sarr's strike denied the Rams victory in their Championship opener against Huddersfield at Pride Park on Saturday.
Curtis Davies had earlier celebrated his return to Derby when opening the scoring but his goal wasn't enough to earn Rooney's men an opening victory in the 2021/22 season.
But in truth, Derby's problems are just about everywhere at the moment.
The instability starts at the top as there's huge uncertainty surrounding who will own the Rams, with failed attempts to purchase the club by Sheikh Khaled and Erik Alonso meaning Mel Morris is still in charge.
Furthermore, it was reported that during a players' meeting on Wednesday night that free agents and trialists were given contracts but without wages as they must wait for EFL approval on what they can pay the players.
And Merson reckons Derby are destined for the drop due to their dire circumstances.
"It's going to be difficult and tough for Wayne," Merson said on Soccer Saturday.
"If he gets through this, it'll probably be the best thing he does in management. Even if he has another 20 years, it will not get harder in this."
But what else happened in the Championship on Saturday? Look at all the scores, below...
